Ljubljana’s old Jewish Quarter · stories beyond the façades

Highlights

A small quarter.
A remarkable history.

  • Explore landmarks within and beyond the old Jewish Quarter.
  • Discover Jewish history, culture, traditions and community life.
  • Hear insider stories and personal perspectives from a guide who is part of the local Jewish community.
  • Ask about an optional visit to the Jewish community centre, synagogue and museum.

Discover a chapter of Ljubljana that is easy to walk past. Our private Jewish Heritage Tour explores the streets of the former Jewish Quarter and the people whose lives shaped its story. From a thriving medieval community to one of Europe’s smallest Jewish communities today, this is a history of belonging, displacement and resilience.

Learn about expulsions, the devastation of the Second World War and the challenges of the socialist period. Along the way, explore Jewish culture and tradition, and hear how the community maintains its heritage in Slovenia today.

Your guide is a member of Ljubljana’s Jewish community. Alongside the history, hear insider stories and personal perspectives on Jewish life in the city, its traditions and the challenges the community faces today. Book with Ljubljana’s original and largest walking tour company for a thoughtful, engaging introduction to the city’s Jewish heritage.

An optional community-centre visit includes its modest third-floor synagogue and museum. Please discuss availability when enquiring; any donation is additional.
